Dr. Jonathan B. Perlin is Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President – Quality of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA, the nation’s leading provider of healthcare services. He is responsible for clinical strategy and continually improving performance at HCA’s approximately 180 hospitals and 80 outpatient centers.

Before joining HCA in 2006, Dr. Perlin was Under Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. As the Chief Executive Officer of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Dr. Perlin led the nation’s largest integrated health system.

At VHA, Dr. Perlin directed the provision of care to more than 5.3 million patients annually by more than 200,000 healthcare professionals at 1,400 sites, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, counseling centers and other facilities. A champion for implementation of electronic health records, Dr. Perlin led VHA performance to international and domestic recognition as reported in academic literature and lay press and as evaluated by RAND, Institute of Medicine, and others.

       
 
 

The Hospital of the Future

COL JONATHAN JAFFIN

COL Jonathan Jaffin became the Commander for the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command on 2 March 2007.  He had previously been serving as the Deputy Commander for the command.

COL Jaffin has held a variety of military assignments. He was a general surgeon for JTF Bravo in Honduras from July to December 1986 and at Walter Reed Army Medical Center until 1988. He served as the group surgeon for 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) from 1988 to 1990. He was the chief of trauma surgery and surgical critical care at Brooke Army Medical Center from 1993 to 1996. He became the division surgeon for the 4th Infantry Division from 1996 to 1998. From 1998 to 1999, he was the chief clinical consultant to the Directorate of Combat Development and Doctrine at the AMEDD Center and School. He assumed command of McDonald Army Hospital, Fort Eustis, Virginia from 1999 to 2001. In 2002, he took command of Walter Reed Health Care System, running that system until 2004. Following command, he served as the Chief, Medical Corps Branch, Human Resources Command.  He moved to the Medical Research and Materiel Command in 2006 as the Deputy Commander.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster and the Army Achievement Medal. He has been awarded the Order of Military Medical Merit, the Order of Saint Christopher and the “A” professional designator. His badges include the Expert Field Medical Badge, the Flight Surgeon Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the Scuba badge.
